WINEMA KING The grapes for this wine were farmed and picked on a row-by-row basis to ensure optimal ripeness. The fruit was then hand sorted and whole berry fermented in small lots. Aged in barrel for 22 months, this wine was neither fined nor filtered prior to bottling.
In a cool, wet vintage like Napa Valley’s 2011 the outstanding location and soil of the Beckstoffer family’s Las Piedras Vineyard, in the relatively warm St. Helena hills west of town on a quickly draining pebbly slope, have served the crafters of this silky, dense, dark wine particularly well. The big, complex aroma of dark berries and black cherry has a whiff of floral notes with a pretty background of nuanced oak and a hint of cigar leaf. The structure is thick and plush with torrents of black fruit nicely backed with subtle, beautifully integrated French oak showing itself as a touch of lead pencil lingering in the long finish. In its youth there is a bit of appropriate astringency underlying the opulence expected from great Napa Valley sites, with some of the elegance characteristic of the 2011 vintage but all of the ripeness and complexity of a great Napa red.
